sharing baby sunshine's name

naming a human being is a big responsibility. it can shape who he becomes. this little person will be called by these letters strung together every day of his life. choosing a child's name is a reflection of you and your partner. who you are. your personalities and ideals. what you want your child to be like.

in the beginning, i'd give hubby long lists of baby boy names that i liked. he'd listen and say yes, no, or maybe to each one. but mostly he'd say no.

once we finally we landed on a name that we both love for our son, we shared it with a few people. quickly, we learned that sharing your baby's name gives people an open invitation to critique it and share their opinion. that bothered me at first so we decided to wait to share his name until after he's born.

but recently, we decided…we don't care what anyone else thinks. we don't need affirmations. this is our son's name and all that matters is that we like it. he's due in 5 days and i'm on bed rest until he arrives. so i thought i'd write this post to share his name a bit earlier in anticipation of his arrival.

this sweet onesie is from the little goose shop on etsy.

what maverick means
independent, nonconformist
symbolizes an unfettered, free spirit

etymology & historical origin
maverick is an english word meaning “independently minded”. interestingly, the word was coined in the mid-1800s by the ranch neighbors of samuel maverick, a texas politician and land baron who refused to brand his cattle. the name received further “wild wild west” cachet in 1994 thanks to the movie “maverick” set in the american old west starring mel gibson.

in 1986, we saw the release of the hugely popular film “top gun” starring a young tom cruise as the independently defiant naval pilot pete “maverick” mitchell. the word and the name “maverick” are both distinctly american. we like to think of ourselves as free, bold and independent.

popularity
initially, we really liked aiden until we realized that it is one of the top ten baby names for little boys right now. according to nameberry, in 2013, maverick was #273 on the popularity list. my iPad baby names app says that there were 851 births last year with the name maverick...placing it at #356 on the popularity list.

interestingly, the name maverick appeared on the american male naming charts for the first time (and very briefly) in the late 1950s. in 1960, the name abruptly disappeared again not to reemerge for another 30+ years in 1994. clearly, the resurfacing of maverick as a boy’s name was influenced by the aforementioned movie starring mel gibson. the name has achieved pretty low-moderate levels of usage. by no means is this a commonly used name which is appealing to us.

characteristics
boys with the name maverick have a deep inner desire for a stable, loving family or community, and a need to work with others and to be appreciated.

boys with this name tend to initiate events, to be leaders rather than followers, with powerful personalities. They tend to be focused on specific goals, experience a wealth of creative new ideas, and have the ability to implement these ideas with efficiency and determination. they tend to be courageous and sometimes aggressive. as unique, creative individuals, they tend to resent authority, and are sometimes stubborn, proud, and impatient.

middle name
we wanted a more traditional middle name to pair with our son's less common first name. we also wanted it to be short and succinct. so we chose dean.

nickname
we call him mav.

Love y'all's son's name. Maverick Dean is beyond precious for a tiny child, will make a fabulous name for young girls to scribble in their notebooks, and will cause him to stand out in a good way. Both Maverick and MacGyver were on our lists for similar reasons. Much love to you and your family.

It doesn't matter what I think, but I love it!! Wow, only 5 days left!! I can't wait to see pics of him! Have a good and safe delivery. Keeping you in my thoughts and prayers.

Dean was actually one of my top picks for our guy. I just think it's so clean and classy, and it doesn't hurt that it always makes me think of one of the hot guys on "Supernatural". ;) M wasn't as keen on it, for whatever stupid reason, so I lost that battle. I'm so jealous you get to use it!

Beautiful! Congrats on settling in a name. I didn't realize it could be so hard til my hubby shot down all of my Top 10 super quick!

I love Maverick Dean! The first thing I thought of was Top Gun and good lookin' Tom Cruise haha. A lot of the same things you guys liked about Maverick as far as popularity is the same things we liked when we were picking our daughter's name. Originally we were thinking Evelyn, after a grandparent, but when we saw how popular it had become over the last few years, we didn't like it as much. Once we decided on Gemma for out little girl, we both knew that was the perfect fit for her - just like Maverick Dean is the perfect fit for your sweet baby sunshine :) If it makes you feel any better, no one in our families like Gemma to begin with, but that's the great thing about being the parent - you get to decide! Eventually everyone has come to love the name because it means so much to us. You and your husband did a great job choosing a strong, beautiful name for your son! Now I just want to see sweet Mav's face! :)

Two thoughts.

First, such a fitting name for your child! Given your journey and all you've been through, Mav just fits.

Second: I hate when people assume they can give this feedback. Names are a special part of this process. Why steal this from a parent, especially those who have fought so hard?

Can not wait to read about Mav's birth story.

I totally love all the reasons behind why you chose that name. I also love that you don't care if people critique it. I found it really hard when people critiqued names I didn't like, so we ended up keeping it a secret until she was born

So cute! So when you posted his nursery, I saw the M. I thought to myself, "it's probably Maverick." Ha! I had no idea I would be right! Love the name!

Aww hon, I love it! And if people don't, who cares because you loving it is the important thing. And it's a strong name. I am over the moon excited for you right now, being so close to your due date. I hope this time flies by for you while you are on bedrest and can't wait to "meet" your long-awaited son.

I love your sweet baby's name! I shared a couple of names with a few people and got the same input that you received. They tell me why THEY don't like that name. Frustrating! I didn't share much after that. You are so close! Hope your delivery go smoothly

JenS said...

I felt so much pressure naming two little humans! We actually didn't decide on names until the girls were a couple days old, but we wouldn't even share with people what names were on our short list. We didn't want any opinions or critiques. Being named Jennifer, I was also adamant that we avoid the top ten names no matter how much I may like one.
You chose a great, uniqe name and all that matters is that you like it and I'm sure it will fit your son. Can't wait to "meet" Maverick Dean.

It's perfect! We had a difficult time coming up with a boy's name as well and agreeing on the same one. Doesn't it feel good once you've decided on "the one?" I love his nickname too. :)

Can't remember if I commented already or just read. So here goes...
I love the uniqueness of ur sons name. I totally get the feeling of ppl thinking they have the need to critique the names u want for your child. I'm open for opinions if I'm asking ppl which name they prefer. J and I are also still deciding on names. The name he likes I was skeptical at first because I felt like ppl would judge our taste in names. Now I just don't care it's a decision between you two and ppl should just accept it. So I say great choice!! Your soon will appreciate having a unique name.

I LOVE that name and I love the meaning behind it! I am glad you stuck with it, despite what people said! I can't wait to see pictures of him!

I LOVE the name!! We've already had a few question our name choice, which we still haven't decided how to reveal yet, but I could give a flip less. I know we picked the right name, and we love it. That's what matters!

I love his name and he will be a strong little boy and man. Can't wait until you are holding him in your arms.

I hate how people give unsolicited opinions about names. One would never say "oh, I don't like your name" to someone already born... Why should it be ok to do that before the birth certificate is complete? It's not. Sometimes when I hear a name I'm not too fond of, I remind myself that the parents know this little being better than anyone else. They know the right name for their baby. Plus, I think your name is cute... not that my opinion matters!! ;)

Krystal Sullivan said...

I cant explain how much I love his name!! We were met with criticism too but like you said, who cares??? You picked well :)
