mexico mission trip: the rebel leader

Hi y'all.
I'm back from Mexico!  I don't even know where to start. This trip was utterly amazing. It isn't even possible to write about the feelings and experiences that I've had over the past week. I fear my words won't do it justice. But I will do my best.

My church took 175 people to Mexico to build homes for families in need. Each leader, over 25 years old, was responsible for transporting their high school students to our campsite...located 45 minutes East of Tijuana. All of the cars were supposed to all stay together in caravan groups during the drive. Each group had a Top Gun name. Maverick. Goose. Ours was Jester. At some point, we got separated from our group from LA to San Diego.

All of the groups were planning to stop at the beach in La Jolla on the drive down. Unfortunately, due to ridiculous traffic in LA, the planners of this trip sent word via text message that we were to skip the beach and keep going to San Diego. My girls (four high schoolers and a younger adult leader) were so disappointed. Crushed, really.

And I couldn't have that. So in true...rebel leader fashion...I had to swing by Oceanside harbor for a quick frolic in the sand. After being in the car for over 8 hours, it was exactly what we needed to lift our spirits. A little jog. Stretch out our legs. Feel the sand between our toes, wind in our hair and sun on our faces. It was a perfect way to spend 30 minutes before arriving in Mexico.

The girls that I met on this trip are truly amazing. We bonded so much on our drive to and from Mexico. Singing. Laughing. Sharing stories about faith and life. Driving such a long distance was something I was dreading. But it turned out to be a wonderful part of the experience that I'll cherish and carry with me always! I'm so blessed to have spent time with these lovely ladies.

More about the Mexico mission trip coming soon...

Such a great thing your group did for people less fortunate. So glad you stopped and let the girls run on beach. Can't go through Mexico without a stop on the beach :)

So excited to hear more about your trip. Rebel leaders are the best and they will cherish that experience with you too! To see that women of faith can be normal and fun is good for teenagers in my opinion!

Love that you were the rebel leader. I led three trips like this in college and I definitely played that role a few times. Once I got in pretty big trouble for it, but besides that, it was always kind of a fun role to play. Looks like the girls had a great time. I'm sure you gave them memories they'll have forever.
