Best Ornament Swap EVER!

A few months ago, I had a vision of hosting a little ornament swap to ring in the holidays. After securing the best swap partner ever, Erin at Living in Yellow, the ball swapping (as E affectionately calls it) was on.

After considerable blog stalking, I went shopping for my partner Jayme. She blogs with her bestie about make-up, fashion and much more at Her Late Night Cravings.
So stop by her blog to see what I sent her.

Once my package was in the mail, I waited patiently (only checking the mailbox 72 times per day) for my ornament from Janna at Perception is Everything. When I first visited Janna's blog, I fell in love with her blog design. It is unique and eye catching. Then I started to read more and realized how much I adore her. She probably won't read this post for a while because her hubby is home from deployment. He's been defending our country for the last 9 months (so thankful for soldiers and all that they sacrifice).

When my package finally came, I was so excited that I almost peed myself. Check out my gifts.

So cute, right? And then I read the card and the waterworks began. Janna gave me two ornaments that are symbols of hope and miracles. She is hoping these will help bring us the baby we've been waiting so long for. I was blown away by how thoughtful her ornaments were.

Every time I see this on my tree it reminds me not to give up hope.

Thanks so much, Janna (from the bottom of my heart)

On the day I posted the swap matches, I got an email from Rachel at in my life i love you more informing me that she signed up, blogged about the swap but wasn't on this list. Of course, I felt horrible. But I have to tell you what she actually said (verbatim) because it speaks volumes about her personality.

Rachel kept checking the list for her name, thinking " I have to be here somewhere, don't I?" She told me "I felt like the girl in gym who never got picked for the team." This, of course, made me chuckle and I knew I had to take on a second swap partner.

Through our emails, I could tell that she has an energetic, vivacious personality...I wanted to hug her through my computer! As Rach and I explored each other's blogs, we realized we have a lot in common and both experienced pain on the road to motherhood. Her sweet, kind, supportive words melted my heart. I can't believe the depth of friendship I feel for someone that I've never even met. I'm thankful that Rachel got skipped. It was serendipity for us to "meet".

Okay, I had to get all of the mushy stuff out of the way first. Now for my ornaments.
My package arrived all the way from New York with the cutest decor on the box.
And look at that handwriting...FAN-CY.

Rachel (because she is sweet like that) got me two ornaments that represent two sides of my personality - glittery and calm. They are both from Pier One. Honestly, is that reindeer not the cutest thing you've ever seen?

And she got herself the same ones so we can match.
Told ya. Meant to be, she and I.
Aren't you curious to see what I got her?
Go visit her blog to find out and show her some love while you're there.

I'm so grateful to have connected with so many amazing bloggers through this swap. And now when I see these special ornaments on my tree, I think of two lovely ladies all the way on the other side of the country.

If you participated in the swap, don't forget to post about your swapping adventure and share your new ornament with us via the linky below. Use the hashtag #ornamentswap on Twitter and Instagram.
Happy December!

4 years.

In a few days, it'll be 4 years since A and I tied the knot. And almost 8 years since we started dating.
It has been a very bumpy ride but it has all been worth it.
We are stronger than we've ever been...despite infertility.

There was a time, not long ago, when I didn't know if we'd make it.
To those of you that may be in a similar place in your marriage, I say "just keep holding on".
I don't know where I'd be if I hadn't. But I wouldn't be laying next to the most forgiving, caring, loving husband a girl could ever ask for. And I wouldn't be as happy as I am with my partner.

From the beginning, we've been complete opposites.
He is all boy and I'm as girly as they come.
I've always been the outgoing, talkative, party girl.
While A is an outdoorsman who prefers the company of our fur baby more than most people.

He likes the dirt and bike racing
I'm a party planner and happy hour attender
I wear high heels, dresses and Chanel perfume to work.
A wears turnouts to work and probably doesn't even know who Chanel is.

Even though our differences attracted us to one another in the beginning, once we were married I started to think that our differences were a huge problem.
Of course, one that I could fix.

If I simply nagged my sweet husband enough, he would eventually change and be exactly what I wanted him to be. Say what I wanted him to say, do what I wanted him to do.
Be the perfect match for me.

Sounds like a great plan, right?

Instead, I wasted so much time striving for perfection and being disappointed when things didn't go the way I wanted them to. It was always something. He wanted to stay home when I wanted to go out. He wanted to wear shorts and flip flops but I wanted him to wear khakis and "normal" shoes.

And then there were the other things...he didn't hold me when I wanted him to. He didn't say the right thing at exactly the right time (according to me, of course). Trouble is...he's not a mind reader so he could never win.

I fell in love with him. Chose to marry him. Yet wanted to change him.
How much sense does that make?  None at all.

Now I appreciate him for exactly who he is - wonderful, beautiful and flawed.
I mean, really. We are all flawed. I know I am. And we all just want the same thing - to be loved and accepted for who we are. I wish it hadn't taken me so long to figure out that being opposites can be a blessing and acceptance, love and grace are the only paths to happiness in a marriage.
But I'm thankful that I finally "get it".

There is a quote that fits this post perfectly.
"Our differences are not intended to separate, to alienate. We are different precisely in order to realize our need of one another."
-Desmond Tutu
Happy anniversary, A.
I hope the next 4 years bring us the baby we've dreamed of to complete our family.
If not, we will continue on this journey together...just us two.
I love you with all of my heart.

Dear God.

With Thanksgiving being only a few short days away, it feels appropriate to give thanks. I feel truly blessed for all that I have in my life. Close family. Incredible husband. The best fur baby in the world. A job that I love. My peaceful home. Health and happiness.

I remember a time when I would pray every night for God to give me a child. To let me get pregnant. Every month when AF showed up, I was devastated. My heart was broken. I didn't know how to be happy if I couldn't be a mother.

But everything changed when I began trusting in God's plan for my life. Slowly, over time, I wasn't depressed anymore. I cried less. I didn't feel hopeless and purposeless. Even my prayers started to change. I found that I stopped praying for God to bless me with a baby. I started to pray for understanding and acceptance. I prayed for the ability to trust.

And now in my prayers, I just give thanks.
For everything that I have. It is not everything that I want. But it is so much more than I need, than I deserve and more than so many others have. I give thanks for the strength that I feel to face my situation and not let it break me down. I give thanks that we have the means to do IVF and the technology that even makes it an option. I give thanks for my loving, understanding husband who holds my hand on this journey even though it is sometimes so difficult.
It changes everything to stop asking and to give thanks.

I hope you all of you have a happy thanksgiving and that you're blessed with many things in your life to be thankful for.

my state of mind.

We are headed to NYC in a few weeks to play.
It will be a great distraction from the impending IVF procedure that we are embarking on.
Having lived in Boston and the DC area, I've done most of the tourist things in Manhattan, but A has never been to New York. So it's up to me to show him the sites. We will only be there for 4 days but I'm planning on packing in the activities.

Below are some ideas that I've come up with.

1.  Ice skating in Central Park - I've always wanted to go ice skating in Central Park. It is even on my 40 before 40 list. Not sure what the weather will be like (snowing or not), but this is such a fairy tale activity to do when visiting New York in December. Especially when I'll have my fave boy with me!

2.  Cupcakes at Magnolia Bakery - This bakery located on the Upper West Side of Manhattan is known for their cupcakes and other sweet treats. Magnolia cupcakes have been featured in countless magazines and movies. Besides being an iconic part of the NYC culture, these cupcakes are just downright delicious. And if I'm being honest, A doesn't eat sweets so this one is totally for me.

3.  Walk across the Highline - When I lived on the East Coast, this park wasn't built yet so I think it's definitely worth checking out. It is an elevated park that runs along old freight-train tracks, part of the New York Central Railroad. It starts a few blocks from the meatpacking district where we'll be staying.

4.  Take in the view from Top of the Rock - Going to Top of the Rock is something you simply must do in New York to make your visit complete. There is truly no other vantage point in the city that offers the inspiring, unobstructed views you'll find high atop the Rockefeller Center. I think A will enjoy seeing the city from this dramatic viewpoint.

5.  Visit the Statue of Liberty - Unfortunately, due to the devastation of Hurricane Sandy, the Statue of Liberty is closed in indefinitely. Liberty Island and its historic neighbor, Ellis Island, were both victimized by the record high water level in the harbor as Sandy took no mercy on the national landmarks. That being said, I think we'll get a water taxi to take us out to get a closer look even though we won't be able to walk onto the island.

6.  Stroll across the boardwalk on Coney Island - Although the rides will probably not be running this time of year, we may take the train to visit the historic seaside of Brooklyn and walk along the boardwalk. We don't usually eat hot dogs but might need to make an exception for Nathan's famous dogs. Gotta do it for the experience, right?

7.  Eat pasta in Little Italy - My mouth is watering right now thinking about the gargantuan plate of pasta that I plan to order and ingest. We'll just walk beside the narrow, cobblestoned streets beneath the fire escapes of turn-of-the-century tenements on Mulberry Street until we're so tempted by the sights, sounds and smells of Italian cuisine and culture emanating from the restaurants that we have to stop and eat. Homemade sauce. The smell of garlic. A glass of Chianti. Can't wait!!!
We're open to any suggestions you may have for restaurants.

8.  Night out in Times Square - A trip to New York wouldn't be complete without taking in the craziness that is Times Square. Even though crowds and shopping are not my hubby's favorite things. It is hard not to be blown away when standing in the middle of Times Square for the first time. I'm looking forward to experiencing that energy, the lights, and the grit of the city with my hubby.

What do y'all think?
Is there anything that I've missed that A has to see or do on our trip?
Let me know some of your favorite things about NYC.

Crock-Pot Link Up: Chicken Taco Chili

Hey y'all.
Is your November off to a great start?
Sure hope so.

If not, I know just what you need.
A hot, steamy bowl of organic chicken chili.
It is a pretty simple recipe that won't take long in your crock pot.

Here it goes.
You'll need your canned goods. I like to use Whole Foods 365 brand.

 And your organic veggies.

And of course your crock-pot.

And your recipe.

Crock Pot Chicken Taco Chili
Serves 6

1 16 oz. can black beans, drained
1 16 oz. can kidney beans, drained
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 medium onion, chopped
1 jalapeno pepper, minced
1 green bell pepper, chopped
10 oz. package frozen corn kernels
1 8 oz. can tomato sauce
1 28 oz. can diced tomatoes
1 tbsp. cumin
1 tbsp. chili powder
1 tsp. dried oregano
1 tsp. kosher salt
1/2 tsp. freshly ground pepper
2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts, uncooked
1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro

Optional toppings: Additional cilantro, shredded cheese, chopped scallions, red onion, sour cream, etc.

Combine ingredients 1 through 14 in a slow cooker. Stir until combined. Place uncooked chicken on top and cover. Cook on low for 6 hours or on high for 4 hours, stirring occasionally.

Thirty minutes before serving, pull chicken breasts apart with two forks. Stir and continue cooking. Top with fresh cilantro or any other desired toppings.

It is so delicious.
I actually put double the chicken in mine which is why it is so hearty.

This recipe is part the crock-pot recipe exchange link-up series with Jane and Andrea. We are bringing you new recipes every 2nd second Sunday during the Fall and Winter months.
So grab the button in my sidebar and join in the fun.

It's On.

So, we had our IVF consult last week.
Even though it was our second time sitting through the spiel,
it was still overwhelming.

But we are moving forward.
Despite the heaps of consent forms,
filled with frightening scenarios that can occur as a part of this procedure.
And the fear of the things that we don't yet know that could result from taking all of the fertility drugs.

Who knows what we will learn 20 years from now.
People could look back at IVF patients and think what crazy lunatics we were for putting our bodies through something that could cause cancer or God knows what else.

I'm supposed to start my next cycle on 11/15.
If I did the normal protocol and started birth control pills for 21 days, my retrieval would fall on Christmas Day.

Not ideal.
We really want to be with family on Christmas.
Plus, it is not easy for A to get off work on holidays.
My next natural cycle would put our retrieval during the one time during the year that our clinic's lab is closed for cleaning.

The cycle after that would put us into March which is so far away.
So my doctor wants to manipulate the timing by putting me on a short cycle of birth control pills (like 17 days) to force a shorter cycle. I normally have 35 day cycles.
Then I would start the next cycle with the normal 21 day birth control protocol.
Then start stims after my that period.

If we go this route and everything goes as planned (which it never does),
I'll be doing my retrieval around January 15th.
I'm a little uncomfortable with doing an extra short month of birth control pills and messing with my cycle more than I have to.

But both my doc and IVF coordinator have assured me that it won't negatively affect the IVF.
The only thing we aren't certain about at this point is...
to PGD or not to PGD.

Dr. M recommends it.
But I'm just afraid of causing harm to the embryos and getting false abnormal readings. What if we go through all of this and most of the embryos come back abnormal and we have nothing to transfer?
We just have to figure out what's right for us.

I trust my doctor but I also want to do my own research and be as informed as I can be.
So that's the update.

One last thing, if you know any good pharmacies that offer discounts on the IVF meds,
please let me know.
Our insurance doesn't cover anything.

last thing I expected...

On my mini vacay with A,
we saw the last thing one expects to see at the beach.
You won't be able to guess.
What do you think?
I'll give you a moment.

Uh uh.

Not it.

Okay, I'll just tell you.
Yes, you heard correctly.
I did say goats.

A and I were walking on Pismo Beach when we saw two white things moving around. From far we thought they were dogs. Then as we got closer, we thought they might be sheep.
Lo and behold, they were two sweet goats tied up and grazing on some shrubbery.

A surfer guy with dreads was nearby so I ran over to chat with him.
I asked him "what's up with the goats?"
He said in his so cal, surfer guy accent, "they are surfing goats.
They just hang out on the beach while I surf."
I asked if they were his pets and he responded yes.
And on that note, he ran out to jump on his board at dusk.

Now I've seen it all.
A nighttime surfer and his pet goats at the beach.

A and I spent the next 15 minutes wondering how he got them to the beach.
Can you image a vehicle transporting two goats and a surf board to the beach?
Gotta love Pismo for things like this.
Makes for good memories.

I don't think we will ever forget the time that we saw the goats at the beach.

Announcement: Ornament Swap Matches

Happy November!
The ornament swap matches are here.
Thanks so much to everyone who signed up for this swap
Almost 200 swappers are joining in the fun.
Also, a special thank you to Erin at Living in Yellow for co-hosting with me.
Love ya, girl!

But first comes first.
The winner of the coveted Pier One zebra ornament goes to (drum roll, please)....
Jenn at Perfectly Imperfect

Please take a quick refresher read on how this swap works before I announce the matches.
We are currently on step 3.

Step 3. Get your match.
On Thursday, November 1st, we will post the swap matches. You will contact the blogger you’re buying for via their blog, email, twitter, facebook, etc. to get their address.

*If you are not contacted by the blogger that is assigned to send to you by Monday, 11/5, please reach out to them.

Step 4. Shop and Mail.
On or before November 12th, purchase and mail your ornament. This means your ornament should be en route to its recipient NO LATER THAN the 12th

Step 5. Receive & Blog about your ornament!
This is the fun part! Blog, Instagram, Tweet your Ornament Swapping Adventure. Be sure and use #ornamentswap on Instagram & Twitter so other Swappers can find you!

Step 6. Link up!
We will be hosting a Linky Party on December 1st for those of you bloggers that want to link up your posts! (This gives you plenty of time to make sure your ornament arrives & recap your adventures.)

And a few more things you should know.

1. You should spend between $4-$14 on your ornament.
2. Ornaments should be new, as no one wants any “gently used” tree decorations.
3. The ornament you purchase should be something fun, quirky, or beautiful that you’d like to receive and that you will be proud of when it is associated with you and your blog.
4. You can purchase ornaments from anywhere. Like these handmades from Etsy or unique ornaments from Pier One or Target.
5. You will not be sending and receiving to the same person. Technically you aren't "swapping", more like a daisy chain of ornaments will be flying through the skies via the postal service. You will send to one person and receive from someone else. This way you get to know at least two people!
6. Be sure to package your ornament in bubble wrap to ensure it arrives safely. Getting a broken ornament is no fun at all.
7. Please do not sign up unless you are 100% sure you can fulfill the swap requirements, we would hate for someone to sign up and not participate.

Here's the synopsis:
Get your assignment.
Contact your match.
Send/receive an ornament.
Blog about it.
Link up.

Without further ado, here are the ornament swap matches...
