my dog's weekend

Yep, this weekend was my dog's weekend. Our activities were all about him. On Saturday, we braved a wind storm and walked the 19th annual Doggie Dash 5k benefiting the Sacramento SPCA. Participating in this walk at William Land Park with our Australian Shepherd Meetup Group is an annual tradition. Normally the weather is great but this year there were 45 mile an hour wind gusts. Not good for allergies. But the walk raised funds for animals in shelters so I suffered through the sniffles for a very worthy cause. Plus, we needed the exercise and it's always good to see our aussie friends and their people. {Yes, our sign is from 2 years ago...we like to conserve resources}

Then on Sunday, it was Splash Dog time! My lil guy competed in his first dock jumping competition. I must say...I'm a proud mama. Since aussies are herding dogs, I wasn't sure how he would do but I had high hopes. He loves to swim (not incredibly common for his breed) and obsesses over his ball. So I thought he might do well. But he's no lab.

First, let me start by telling you a little bit about Splash Dogs. The Splash Dogs Dock Jumping Competition is an event that travels to different cities where dogs compete for distance by diving off a dock into a pool of water to see who can jump the farthest. Dog/handler teams can compete in one or more competition waves throughout the weekend in order to qualify for the event finals, which are held on Sunday afternoons.

Last year, we stumbled upon this event in a strip mall parking lot and thought it was pretty neat. So this year, I decided to get in on the action. I'm so glad I did. We had a great time and my aussie baby jumped a whopping 13.1ft to qualify for the Junior finals. In the finals, we choked and took 10th place in his class. Not too bad for a newbie...we'll take it. But most of all, it was a ton of fun. Some family and friends came by to cheer us on which was so sweet. Thanks to all of our cheerleaders!

Now I have the Splash Dog bug and have been trying to strategize how to get my boy to jump farther next time. A started teasing and calling me "the crazy dog lady". Bottom line: I'm a competitor. Now I can't stop until we break some world records!

Awww!! So fun! I love aussies. We have one too :). He LOVES the water, but I don't think we could get him to jump off the platform - he won't even jump off our dock!

The Doggie dash was so much fun! You're right though...the wind was crazy!
Splash Dogs looks awesome!!! We are trying to get our German Shepard pup to be more of a water dog. So far she's very slowly easing into it! :)

OMG. I loved this post. I called my son in my office to read about the Doggie competition. Loved your pictures. We are total dog people. Stella is my baby. 9 month old German Shepard, and the hardest part of going on vacation was leaving her. I fret about her a lot. Thanks for sharing, never knew a thing about these dog events.

WOW! We just rescued an Aussie! Her name is Condi and she is a 1 1/2yr old! If you can post on my blog or email I would love to talk to you more about playdates and such with your group and your sweet Aussie(s). I also have a Alaskan Malamute (also a rescue) named Phoenix. I am so excited to hear all about your Aussie and everything. We love her but no nothing about the breed!
